In September 2011, our school invested hugely in a new programme called ‘Literacy Lift Off’, also known as ‘Power Hour’ to the children. Literacy Lift-Off is a whole-class intensive intervention aimed at increasing each child’s competency in oral language, reading and writing. Four adults will facilitate this programme for one hour, five days a week.
During each session the children will have time to practice literacy in a fun way in their groups; they will read a new book, do some writing, practice sight words and learn to recognise and put together the different sounds in the English language.
First Class are availing of this programme. As part of the programme, the children are divided into four reading groups according to reading ability levels. These groups are regularly reviewed and change according to need.
During each Literacy Lift-Off session, children experience four activities:
- Familiar Reading
- Word Work
- Writing
- New Book
During the course of the programme, it is intended that the children will develop and improve their literacy skills through small group teaching.
